Less than three months after introducing the all-new Rondo at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Kia showed just how versatile our favorite crossover vehicle is. The Rondo SX Concept, which debuted at the Chicago International Auto Show, shows off some cool and clever modifications to the original design.
The Rondo SX Concept takes its inspiration from the sportier SX-trim level, seen on SX versions of the Rio and Spectra. SX models offer more performance-oriented looks, featuring grill inserts and ground effects, complemented by a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. This Rondo Concept bares its SX-style with an enlarged lower air intake, brake cooling ducts, and metal mesh grill inserts. The rear of the car adds an air diffuser, and dual chrome exhaust tips. The roof rails are no more, nixed in favor of a smoother look. The SX Concept is also lowered three-inches, sitting on 18-inch alloys. This car pulls out all the stops, no doubt, with special cross-drilled and slotted front and rear brake rotors.
On the inside, the standard Rondo seats have been outfitted in gray leather, with contrasting red leather and dark gray Alcantara inserts; the front and rear door panels were designed to match the seats. The steering wheel is wrapped in black leather against contrasting red stitching; the instrument panel has been refined with platinum-hued accents; the pedals are brushed stainless steel. Yup, this ride is clean.
And a little mean. The Rondo SX Concept’s sporty-aggressive appearance is no phony facade: the 2.7L V-6 was souped-up with a custom cold air intake and dual cat-back exhausts, tweaks that not only amplify the engine’s purr, but add significant horsepower.
