Auto Shows Detroit

Me and My Kia... choosing a car that is not typically modified was right up my alley.

Detroit’s NAIAS is one of the most important auto trade shows in the western hemisphere. And among the most prestigious and exclusive awards handed out at the show are the EyesOn Design Awards.

What makes these EyesOn Design Awards such distinguished prizes in the automotive world? That would be the elite selection committee that picks the winners. This 24-person jury is comprised entirely of highly-respected industry professionals, including directors of design at international manufacturers, as well as chairmen from the most influential design schools in the world, among others. It’s a who’s who of the automotive design world, and they consider every new vehicle introduced at NAIAS.

This committee hands out only four EyesOn Design Award awards each year, and the categories are:

  • Aesthetics and Innovation focuses on the aesthetics of design, the essence of design, and the innovative way it creates a new and significant design standard.
  • Concept Implementation centers on a concept scheme or attribute that is crafted to bring out the true brand or product character in a new and significant way.
  • Functionality focuses on how a design conveys function in an efficient and usable way that enables the user to carry out daily life in a proficient and constructive way.
  • Spirit of Industrial Design looks for the design that best blends materials, aesthetics and functions in a way that suggests greater customer appreciation.

The coveted EyesOn Design Award for Functionality was won by the Kue crossover concept vehicle. Bragging rights will be shared among U.S. chief designer Tom Kearns and his elite team at the Kia Design & Technical Center in Irvine, California. Congrats!

With all four wheels pushed out to the corners and prominent wheel flares highlighting a quartet of massive 22-inch alloy rims, the Kia Kue looks powerful and aggressive, ready to pounce. And the Kue backs up its aggro appearance with a supercharged 4.0L DOHC V-8 engine that turns a pavement-scorching 400 horsepower with an incredible 400 lb-ft. of torque. Thankfully a full-time all-wheel drive system helps harness all that juice while up to four passengers take in the exhilaration from the comfort of sculpted, individual seats. Whether on the surface or under the hood, the Kue definitely packs plenty of Power to Surprise.

EyesOn Design is the primary source of revenues for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology’s research, education and support group programs that enhance the independence of the visually impaired. For more information on EyesOn Design, go to www.eyeson.org
